Why Artists need liability insurance

You may think that putting pen, pencil or paintbrush to paper is unlikely to require the need for such cover but what if you accidentally spilt paint or ink onto a customer’s clothing or possessions while you were drawing them. That item could be an expensive designer label and may cost hundreds or even thousands of pounds. This is where public liability insurance comes into play.

It protects you from the cost of any unexpected incidents that artists could be liable for, which could result in financial difficulties for you and your company. Public liability insurance for artists is not compulsory but essential to ensure your business’ survival.

Common types of claims

• Spilling paint/ink on a member of public’s property (i.e. clothes, possessions, etc.)
• Someone tripping over your easel and injuring themselves
• Stepping back to view your drawing and knocking over and breaking someone’s property behind you

This cover is optional but Ashburnham recommends that you certainly consider having it. Furthermore, if you have valuable equipment, you may wish to consider tools cover to provide compensation in the event of them being stolen.
